I was raised protectively under my parents' arms. For the past 18 years, the only two things I needed to worry about were how to be ranked top ten in class, and behave with well-manner. As long as I gratified my parents's pride and expectation, I was marked as a 'good girl'. I totally understand that parents are always want the best for their children but is it true though? Is it something that they could not achieve in the past, then unconsciously forced the next generation to pursue that dream on their behalves? What parents assumed 'good', would it be really suitable for their children?
Back to the princess's innocent story. I exceedingly was overwhelmed and confused about the sudden exposure to the gigantic world. Living with my family, I did not have to concern about anything because other family members managed everything. In my opinion, I was 'spoiled'. I was not aware of the surrounding world, even my inner self, what to do with my life, etc. I completely was lost and panic. One of the issues that drew my attention was working or earning money.
Not until today, I fully am mindful about this sensitive topic, money. I hate discussing this controversial subject, because it is the major cause of several disasters. Unfortunately, this society cannot operate without it. I want to gain more freedom, independence as well as prove my talents and position in this society, but no one is willing to believe it, because I am just a poor young college student, whose knowledge, financial status, reputation, commitment, and contribution is insanely slim. I tried get good grades at school and perform those kind gestures with the purpose of proving myself to others. As you can guess, who cares? My rationale is not strong enough to persuade people that I am capable of.
I fully committed to my academic life, missed various fun and meaningful events in my life, applied for no job due to time limits and different policies, while my friends were rolling their lives with ambition to be wealthy, targets, and means of entertainment. By witnessing others, I realised what my shortcoming was. Since then, I slowly integrated into adult world, and began applying for some part-time jobs. I got it!
Should we work while studying? Speaking from my personal experience, I think it is necessary to work while study. Here are some advantages of this decision:
You can have an active income which is supportive for paying off tuition fee, or at least some daily expenses.
You will enhance your independence and autonomy.
You will be more pleasant with your life because of the sense of freedom which means you can do whatever you want without asking or waiting for anyone's permission.
You will have lower stress about shortage of monthly money, or how to pay the bills every month.
You will gain more confidence and respect for yourself and from other people.
You will broaden your social network, as well as both 'hard' and 'soft' skills at workplace.
You will be able to identify your strengths, weaknesses, working style, overall, learning more about your true self.
It is heart-breaking to hear about this naked truth. Even though nobody explains it, we should be aware that money has its invisible power that silently and tremendously impacts our lives.
On the other hand, despite that fact, I never encourage people to become a victim of money. We should work but should not overwork. There is no rule to prevent college students from having a job while studying; however, they need to be mindful about time management, physical and mental health status, and priorities in their lives.
